Group buy: K40 Mini 40W desktop laser

Posted by Ignatius Havemann on November 20, 2013  /   Posted in Blog

25 November 1013 – A tool I have had on my wish list for quite some time – and I know many of you too – is a laser cutter. I have looked at many options including buying locally, importing from China as well as building it myself. Unfortunately it remains a high price item. Initially, I always figured I can build it better and cheaper myself but everything adds up rather quickly – except if you try to build it with crappy ACME threaded rod and common 3D printer linear bearings. I firmly believe that route will lead to many headaches and will end up being a slow and pretty useless cutter.

Not being able to afford a big professional cutter I decided to get a small and cheap desktop cutter. It will enable me to do most of the cutting and engraving myself and allow me to evaluate if a large expensive cutter should be on my NEED or WANT list! If I need to do bigger jobs or larger orders I can still use the 3rd party companies as I have always done.

I am looking to buy the K40 III mini desktop laser:

  • 40W CO2 laser.
  • 0.01mm accuracy.
  • 300mm x 200mm engraving area.
  • 800mm x 500mm x 250mm machine dimension – 28kg.
  • 45kg packaged in plywood case.
  • This is the 3rd edition K40, with numerous upgrades and an improved controller.
  • USB controlled with Windows software.
  • By default it cuts up to 50mm/s but can be increased with some hacking – It saves me from driving to another company to get the cut done so slow is fine with me…
  • It is a hobby cutter but capable. Not the best quality mirrors etc but usable.
  • Mainly marketed for engraving but can cut acrylic/perspex up to 5mm in one pass at slowest speed.
  • Many upgrades and tips on the internet. Best if you do not mind tinkering a bit.
  • I have seen people control it with Mach3 and using 3D printer electronics such as our CoolSteps 2.1 stepper drivers.
  • Includes water cooling pump, extractor fan and software.

The problem I am facing now is getting this cheap laser cutter shipped to me in SA while keeping the cost down. After duties and VAT the cutter costs about R6500. The quote I received for air shipping is another R6000. Add onto that a few hidden costs as I have learned when I imported my CNC router and you easily end up paying R14 000 for it. Shipping via sea freight is cheaper. Problem here is the supplier will not ship me only 1 cutter. If I want to ship via sea I have to buy a minimum of 4 laser cutters. This is where you come in.

I propose we do a group buy. If I can get 4 or more people to buy a laser cutter then we can have it delivered in Jhb for R9500. Now that sounds more like it!

How will this work?

  • You will have to pay a 60% deposit, with the balance as soon as they arrive in RSA.
  • I will give you the bill of lading so you can track the shipment every step of the way.
  • We do charge a small fee for doing all the work and delivering to your door – Gauteng only – but this is included in the R9500.
  • This price is calculated at ZAR/USD = R10.20
  • Sea shipping usually takes 6 – 8 weeks but delivery will obviously depend how soon we get enough people.
  • If we do not get enough people or you want your money back before we place the order we will fully refund your deposit.
  • We do not officially support this product but will assist where we can if you have trouble setting up or using this cutter.

So, if you are in the market for a laser cutter or want to get yourself a new tool give us a shout or drop us a comment! Also feel free to contact us if you would like more info regarding the K40 III laser cutter.

Great news! We already have 3 people interested making the group buy possible!
One person will only be able to take part in January so I will keep the offer open till then.
The more we order the more we can negotiate for a better price, so if you would like to get one for yourself or team up with a few friends and buy it together give us a shout.

Good morning, I stumbled upon your website this morning and first thing noticed was the laser cutter. You can count me in, I’m interested. I operated from the small town Philippolis in the Southern Free State, but visit Johannesburg regularly.
For interest, a year ago I imported some Date coders from China and because I have an account with DHL, I thought it would be worthwhile to get a quote from them. The supplier in China gave me the dimensions and mass, and based on that DHL quoted me R14500.00. I asked the Chinaman to get a quote from DHL in China, and it came to R4500.00.

        Hi Uys,

Great to have you on board and thanks for the DHL pricing.
There are a few people interested but I have not confirmed with anybody yet.
I will get in contact with every body during the first week of February to discuss the group buy in detail.

        Keep well,

This looks like a nice machine. Can this machine cut and engrave on metal ? If it can , I am interested.
I got my own Laser engraving business and I am looking to buy a CNC Desktop Router but like you said to import it is just to expensive. Do you know where I can buy a CNC Desktop Router even if it’s a second hand one.

It will definitely not be able to cut metal, you need a very powerful CO2 laser but a YAG would probably be better.
I have imported a desktop CNC a while back, 360mm x 360mm bed, 50mm Z axis, but after VAT etc this is a bit expensive for the size. If you are interested, we are planning to sell CNC kits in the near future. MDF and HDPE frame, using either a spindle or router depending on your needs. Cut size of 1200mm x 600mm x 115mm. Send me a mail if you want more info.

    Good morning Ignatius

I (and at least one of my business partners) will be interested to participate in the group buy.
From your reply to Uys above I understand this might happen sometime in February?

      Hi Paul,

Including you we are a possible 6 who are interested, so this group buy looks like a guaranteed go!
Seems like as people are returning from the festive holidays we are getting more participants. We will try to negotiate for a better price the more we buy. I will be out of town the first week in Feb, on my return I will contact everybody to discuss details, maybe arrange a meetup to put faces to names. The Rand/Dollar rate got a bit worse in the last month so this is something we should also keep an eye on. Will keep you updated.

I would like to thank all the backers of this group buy. Great success! We have ordered a new version – the K40IV – with integrated air assist and a new designed bed. Also included is a small air compressor for the same price! The cargo should be loaded on the ship today (4 March, 2014 ) and then it is a long 6 – 8 weeks wait :(
Will post photos when they arrive.

    HI There

What is the price and specs of your desktop cnc Lazer

Do you do any other CNC machinery ?

    • Ignatius Havemann November 17, 2014 2:38 pm / Reply

We did a collaborative group buy to import the laser cutters. We do not stock any machinery but have assisted others to import CNC equipment for them. If you drop me a mail with some details of what you need I might be able to help.
